401 Girod Street Residential Apartments & Commercial Retail
The 401 Girod Street Apartment project is part of a larger Warehouse District development that includes renovations to the neighboring 637 and 641 Tchoupitoulas Street properties. A “low-key”, circa 1870 Commercial Warehouse, the Girod Street building was converted into an auto service/filling station in the early 20th century. The building is very rare because it is an urban party-wall service station and much of the building’s first floor was removed for auto drive-through service, so existing open spaces needed to be preserved. Research indicates that in the 19th century, the building had a high hip roof.
The renovation project involved converting the 5,600 square foot first floor into retail space. Apartments have been incorporated into the 7,500 square feet second floor. An overgrown parking lot in the rear of the building has been reincarnated as a landscaped courtyard for residents.
