Landis receives award recognition

Landis Construction Co., LLC (LCC) has been recognized by the Associated Builders & Contractors’ Bayou Chapter for quality and innovative construction. At the 2010 Excellence in Construction and STEP Awards dinner on Wednesday, November 17, 2010, LCC received three awards.

Lacoste School & Field House project in Chalmette, LA.  – Award of Excellence

The two part project, completed in December 2009, included the Education Building and the Field House.  The first phase, the Education Building opened to students in August, 2009.  The 57,000 sq. ft. concrete superstructure includes a three-story open rotunda with 2nd and 3rd floor balconies and exterior glass block walls; category III impact resistant windows; custom-designed epoxy terrazzo flooring; administrative and classroom wings and an Energy Recovery Unit.

The second phase, the Field House, is a single-story 48,000 square foot facility that serves not only the students of St. Bernard Parish, but also neighboring parishes.  The facility includes a full basketball/volleyball gym, wrestling and fitness centers, state of the art locker rooms, and a Natatorium complete with an Olympic-sized completion swimming pool.

Second Line Stages project in New Orleans, LA – Award of Excellence

An old taxi cab warehouse and abandoned surrounding properties were transformed in Louisiana’s first state-of-the-art media production facility and the nation’s first independent green film studio.  Located in the lower garden district of New Orleans, and overseen by the HDLC, the project consisted of a one square block renovation connecting four existing historic buildings and the construction of a new five-story building.  The layout includes three soundstages, production office space, a digital screening theatre, offices, conference area and a roof top terrace with magnificent views of the Mississippi River and Downtown New Orleans.

Building inside a historic building, maintaining its integrity in all aspects was important while keeping the shell intact and creating an interior that conformed to twenty-first century sound stage requirements.  The project team was not only able to rehabilitate a shell of historic buildings, but also transform the location into a high-caliber soundstage.  All major elements of the project – from sound stages and office space to the parking lot – were included in the quest to be ‘green’.  Working with local architects and engineers, Second Line Stages was built to comply with the US Green Building Council standards and is scheduled to achieve LEED Silver rating.  Following the guidelines and using creative thinking onsite, the team was able to divert from landfills over 2,600 tons of construction waste!  This project was a major catalyst in catapulting the greater New Orleans area from a location site to a production site or “Hollywood South” as the area has been coined by local community leaders.

Safety Training Evaluation (STEP) Gold Award

STEP is a benchmarking tool that helps ABC members enhance their safety and training programs.  The program provides the resources contractors need to measure a safety program’s progress each year and determine how it compares to the practices of other ABC members.  In addition, the STEP program offers local and national recognition for the company’s efforts to maintain safe workplaces and jobsites.
