Second Line Stages

An old taxi cab warehouse and abandoned surrounding properties were transformed in Louisiana’s first state-of-the-art media production facility and the nation’s first independent green film studio.  Located in the lower garden district of New Orleans, and overseen by the HDLC, the project consisted of a one square block renovation connecting four existing historic buildings and the construction of a new five-story building.  The layout includes three soundstages, production office space, a digital screening theatre, offices, conference area and a roof top terrace with magnificent views of the Mississippi River and Downtown New Orleans.

Building inside a historic building, maintaining its integrity in all aspects was important while keeping the shell intact and creating an interior that conformed to twenty-first century sound stage requirements.  The project team was not only able to rehabilitate a shell of historic buildings, but also transform the location into a high-caliber soundstage.  All major elements of the project – from sound stages and office space to the parking lot – were included in the quest to be ‘green’.  Working with local architects and engineers, Second Line Stages was built to comply with the US Green Building Council standards and is scheduled to achieve LEED Silver rating.  Following the guidelines and using creative thinking onsite, the team was able to divert from landfills over 2,600 tons of construction waste!  This project was a major catalyst in catapulting the greater New Orleans area from a location site to a production site or “Hollywood South” as the area has been coined by local community leaders.

Landis Selected for St. Bernard Project

Landis has been selected for the St. Bernard Parish Government 34th Judicial Courthouse Repairs, Alterations and Historical Restoration project.

The 12 month project includes exterior wall limestone restoration, new roofing, preservation and rehabilitation of historical paneling, millwork, light fixtures, marble flooring and original plaster walls.

Landis Corporate Office

In 2008, the Nationally Registered, historic American Chicle Building was purchased by the owners of Landis Construction Co., LLC to convert into the corporate offices. With Landis’s experience in historical restoration and green construction, not to mention the building’s inspiring raw material, it was a match made in renovation heaven! As construction began the day after acquisition of the building, the job took the shape of an extreme Design-Build project. The building held many secrets; the designers were unable to visualize some of the issues that needed to be dealt within their initial design. Through extensive collaboration on all levels of project management, the third floor and part of the second floor of the building was quickly transformed into the home of Landis. While keeping the exposed beams and columns, wood floors, and high ceilings that made the original building so special, Landis incorporated state of the art green elements and technological improvements to bring the building into the new millennium.

Trinity Lutheran Church Post Katrina Renovations

Trinity Lutheran Church is the oldest Lutheran church on the New Orleans Westbank and noted as the fourth oldest Lutheran church in the City of New Orleans.  Following
Hurricanes Katrina and Rita Landis was contracted to repair the structure. The altar suffered major damage. The front steeple and bell tower were blown off, and a historic stained glass window that once adorned the front window was broken. The wood floors had begun to warp and buckle due to weathering the absorption of storm rains, a damaged roof and the sweltering heat and humidity Louisiana summers bring. The electrical system was ruined and had to be replaced and brought up to code. Much of the church’s millwork needed to be repaired or replaced. The aggressive schedule for the project set to restore and repair the church was only 180 days.

St. Charles Parish Hospital David J. Vial Patient Care Center

At St. Charles Parish Hospital, Landis built an addition to the existing hospital. Each floor of the addition has a particular focus. The first floor is multi-faceted and houses the Cardiology Rehabilitation Center, the Courtyard Café, the Chapel, the Outpatient Dialysis Unit, a Medical Office Suite, and the relocated and expanded Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The first floor of the addition ties into both the neighboring Medical Office Building and the existing hospital building.

The second floor of the new Patient Care Center includes 31 private Medical-Surgery rooms. The area was relocated from the existing hospital. Each private room contains large bathrooms and personal showers, and the newest technology monitoring equipment. Finally, the third floor contains the relocated Adult Behavioral Health Inpatient Unit which is comprised of twenty private patient rooms. All components in the patient areas had to meet tamper-proof criteria so that the patients could not do harm to themselves or those providing care.
