			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://www.landisllc.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/Group-Pic.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-1206" title="Group Pic" src="http://www.landisllc.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/Group-Pic-300x225.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="225" /></a>The owners and management of New Orleans-based Landis Construction, LLC are proud to announce that the company finished the year 2011 with <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">no accidents occurring among its staff on any jobsites and projects</span></strong>.  Specifically, this means <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">no workers’ compensation claims, no time lost or delays due to accidents, and no injuries or jobsite incidents</span></strong> throughout the entire year.   This is an exciting achievement, because a year without any construction jobsite incidents is not the easiest accomplishment in this industry.<br />
“In any given year, only a very small percentage of general contractors nationally achieve the honor of an accident-free year,” says Landis president Jim Landis.  “This distinction further illustrates our commitment to safety throughout the organization, from Project Managers to Superintendents and jobsite workers.”</p>
<p>Landis was involved in 12 major construction projects in 2011.  These include:<strong> </strong>the<strong> </strong><strong>Convocation Center and Annex Building at Xavier University</strong><strong>;</strong> Xavier’s <strong>new St. Catherine Drexel Chapel;  </strong>restoration and repairs to the historic<strong> 34<sup>th</sup> District Courthouse in St. Bernard Parish;  </strong>the new television studios at<strong> WYES</strong>; and construction of a <strong>new restaurant </strong>at the<strong> Royal Sonesta hotel</strong>.   The company recently celebrated the “zero accidents” achievement by honoring its 40 field employees at a company luncheon.</p>

This unique project consisted of new construction of five different floor plans on ten lots over a six-block radius in the mid-city area near the university. The houses, designed to blend into the style of the existing neighborhood, were built to adhere to the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) green building standards, and have been certified Gold.</p>
<p>Green elements used in the project include bamboo floors, sprayfoam insulation, bluwood for framing and decking, low-VOC paints and sealants. A new advanced framing method was used to reduce the number of studs in the houses, reducing the need for lumber and other materials.</p>

<p>The branch was designed to serve as the hub for the bank should another catastrophe happen in the future.  There is an emergency generator powerfule enough to supply the entire building&#8217;s operations, and the training and conference rooms are supplied with additional power and data to serve as temporary office space should the need arise.</p>
<p>Flooring finishes for the project include cast-in-place epoxy terraxxo on the interior and cementious terrazzo exterior.  Cust rift-cut white oak stained millwork and granite countertops were designed to match the design of other branches in the area.</p>

Each side or elevation of the building is boat-shaped with a sloped roofline and the walls wrap around and culminate at the highest roof area over the altar. The large, double-pitched standing seam metal roof resembles a large wave form over the central part of the church or nave. The church has a 35 foot tall vertical element marking the entry, which recalls a campanile or bell tower, and a large portico that contains a bronze bas-relief of St. Anselm. </span></span></span></div>

<div><span style="font-size: small;">A feature in the new church is the use of natural light. The ceiling is separated from the walls with a continuous halo of clerestory windows which admit natural light along the perimeter and make the roof appear to float. Centered in the nave ceiling is a cut-out recessed plaster fish, the symbol for Christ. In addition, the center aisle which measures 80 feet in length is comprised of flagstone that begins at the front steps and proceeds all the way to the altar. On the altar is an impressive eight foot tall, 600 pound crucifix comprised of solid wood positioned on a large gold altar screen or Reredos.  </span></div>

The relationship with the developer created a design-assist process, beginning with the feasibility study and carrying it through construction. Landis worked with a compressed construction schedule due to unavoidable delays in Owner financing, therefore an eleven-month project schedule became a nine-month schedule. The project included 61 units which equaled 36,000 square foot historic restoration and 21,000 square foot new construction.</p>
<p>This historic restoration phase of the project includes two buildings totaling 57,000 square feet. Elements include heavy timber &amp; masonry building with steel components; completely new electrical, mechanical and sprinkler systems; masonry wall restoration and new roofs. The project was completed following LHFA (Louisiana Housing Finance Authority) Green Building Standards.</p>

The 20,000 square-foot project, known as the Technical Building is expected to be complete in early Spring, 2012 and will serve as the new studios and editing space for the station as well as the new home of the auctions.</p>
<p>The station is currently housed in the orginal structure that was built in the lates 1950&#8242;s and endured substantial flooding in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.</p>
