The new performance venue and educational center will transformed the Gator’s Discount Store into a custom-made permanent home for the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra. Located on Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard in New Orleans’s Central City, this project is part of an intensive and ongoing neighborhood revitalization. The 14,000-square-foot, two story facility includes a performance venue, a rehearsal room, an archive of New Orleans Jazz, an education room, two bars, and executive offices. The second
floor of the venue includes a VIP area with seating and bar area. Total seated capacity is designed to be 360; capacity with a combination of standing room and limited seating can accommodate as many as 600 guests.
Given that the venue is centered around music and sound, sophisticated audio and video technologies has been incorporated throughout. Acoustical provisions include two types of acoustical panels, wood paneling, and Filzfelt on the walls/ceilings. Two large acoustic clouds, made from steel and clad with tongue-and-groove wood, hang from the ceiling over the stage to deflect sound. Special sound-attenuating ductwork is used in the auditorium to reduce noise. In addition, the space will be wired for complete live streaming from various media channels.
